Hi, we’re Colby & Jake.
We’re based in New York City, and we try to live by a saying we once heard: what you do for a living should be the least exciting thing about you.
We have too many hobbies and not enough time (or money). We love to ski, we’ve recently fallen hard for sailing, and nothing beats time with our family and friends.
Despite popular belief (we’re traveling more often than we’re home), we really do love NYC. There’s something about this city that keeps us young and on the go. We love the energy, the once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and the endless options of things to do at any hour of any day. And we love waking up early and walking five minutes to the Brooklyn Bridge to watch the sunrise.
Anyway, we travel to find new spots for our list of potential retirement locations, to experience new and unique cultures, and to meet new people and see how they’re living life. Mostly, we just love soaking in everything this beautiful planet has to offer.
Jake is the photographer. Colby mostly just loves to travel, but she recently got herself a big girl camera, so you’ll start seeing her shots around here too.

Why “The Circus Wagon”?
One summer we didn’t want to spend thousands of dollars on a Block Island hotel. So naturally, we bought a sailboat off Facebook Marketplace instead. To save money.
She’s a 1987 Hunter 28.5, and she lives up in Connecticut near Jake’s family’s house.
We named her The Circus Wagon because we always bring way too much STUFF. We’re both nervous packers who love gadgets and like to have EVERYTHING just in case, so even on a day trip to Fishers Island, she ends up looking like a circus wagon. Haha.
As you’ll see from some of our posts, we probably should have just paid for the hotel. Haha.
But that one spontaneous purchase has given us some of our best moments and all of our best stories, so the name stuck to everything.
Why we're doing this
We’re not influencers. We’re just some normal middle-aged people doing this life for the first time too, trying to document our own life: the stories, the people we meet, and the paths we’ve traveled down.

Our alternative to social media
We feel social media doesn’t properly capture all of the special moments, so this is our alternative: one place to keep our trips organized, so we can look back on the travels, the laughs, the places, the people we met and the crazy stories.
You HAVE to…
When someone tells us they’re headed somewhere we’ve been, we want to be able to say, “Oh my gosh, we love it there! If you have time or want some suggestions, check out our posts.” We’re sharing to be helpful and in no way expect anyone to read all of this. But at least we can send the link, and you can pull up the page, download our Google Map, grab a few suggestions, and maybe have a laugh.
