Beginnings & Purpose

Our story

We started scribbling notes on torn receipts and paper logbooks during our first long boat passage. It was never meant to be a polished publication—we simply refused to let the funny conversations, curious harborside characters, and tiny unforgettable moments fade the second we pulled up anchor.

The Circus Wagon is our running journal for the real journeys: the quiet anchorages at sunrise, the back-alley tavernas we still recommend to friends over dinner, and the honest, unscripted days between departure and arrival.

"Travel is better when you keep the mistakes, the good meals, and the wind in your hair."
— Colby & Jake

Why “The Circus Wagon”?

It started as an inside joke among friends after watching us unpack the trunk of our beat-up station wagon. Two surfboards strapped askew to the rack, three camera pelican cases, drying wetsuits draped across headrests, and a dog happily sleeping on top of the sleeping bags. Someone shook their head and laughed: “Here comes the circus wagon.”

The label stuck because it was honest. We were never the minimal, coordinated travelers with matching luggage and itinerary binders. We were the ones who said yes to spontaneous detours, gathered stray gear, and carried our entire universe along for the ride.

“We realized early on that travel wasn’t about flawless logistics. It was about making room for the wonderful mess of real discovery.”
— Colby & Jake, journal notes at anchor

When we finally bought an aging wooden sailboat to explore coastal archipelagos and live on the water, there was never another name on the table. We officially painted “The Circus Wagon” across the transom. It serves as our constant reminder to travel light in spirit, stay curious, and share real stories over polished postcards.

Our Purpose

Why we're doing this

We started The Circus Wagon because our group chats, paper notebooks, and scattered email threads kept losing the places that truly mattered.

"We wanted an honest, sun-warmed corner of the web where travel feels like an unhurried conversation over morning coffee, not a transaction."

— Colby & Jake

Modern travel platforms feel frantic. They are crowded with sponsored placements, review manipulations, and urgency banners telling you someone else just booked your room.

This public journal is our antidote. It is a quiet place where we document our voyages at sea, mountain drives, and village stays exactly as we experienced them — without commercial hype or affiliate clutter. If we suggest an anchor spot in the Cyclades or a back-alley bakery in Oaxaca, it is because we would walk our closest friends straight through the front door.

Real routes, no sponsored fluff

Every cove, road, and cafe here is somewhere we actually spent time, paid our way, and loved.

Quiet by design

No popups, no algorithmic traps, and no rushed ad carousels — just clear entries and good paper-like pacing.

Made for friends first

A single open archive where our families, friends, and kindred travelers can find our notes whenever they set out.
